CHAPTER 37

Jack and the Most Beautiful Girl in the World

Morning sunlight slipped through his blinds in skinny strips. Jack’s eyelids fluttered and opened. He lay on his back. Eve lay in the crook of his arm, her arm over his chest. He lifted the covers and peeked at Eve. She wore her white lacy bra and underwear. It all came back to him. After the drinking games, Aaron had gone to bed, but Jack and Eve had stayed up for hours, just laughing and talking. They’d kissed, but they hadn’t had sex, and he didn’t care. It wasn’t the alcohol either. He wasn’t that drunk last night, and neither was Eve, as Aaron had cut the drinking games short, not to mention Jack was great at quarters.

Jack watched her sleep, her breathing rhythmic against him. That creep in her DMs was right. She is the most beautiful girl in the world.

She stirred and opened her eyes. “Good morning.”

Jack smiled and pecked her on the lips, careful not to breathe in her face. “Good morning.”

Dull thuds came from Aaron’s room next door. Likely the shutting of his drawers unnecessarily hard.

“I think Aaron’s pissed at me,” Jack said.

“We went on one date,” Eve replied. “We didn’t even kiss.”

Jack shook his head. “I violated bro code. I should’ve asked him before …”

Eve sat up. “I’m not a piece of property to be transferred between guys.”

Jack sat up too. “That’s not what I meant. He likes you, and, if he finds out about this, it’ll hurt his feelings.”

“What should we do?”

“I’d rather he didn’t know you slept over. I’d like to see you again, but I should tell him first.”

Eve tried to restrain her smile, but it still blossomed. “Okay.”

“We can hide out in here until he leaves for his appointment. Sounds like he’s leaving soon.”

Eve winced. “My car. It’s right out front.”

“Does he know your car?” Jack asked.

Eve nodded. “Definitely. He commented on it when we met at the trailhead yesterday.”

“Shit. We need to get you out of here now.”

They dressed quickly and tiptoed out of Jack’s bedroom. Halfway to the front door, Aaron exited his bedroom, catching them in the act.

Jack pivoted to Aaron. “Morning, bro.”

Aaron walked toward them, his glare reserved for Jack. “Don’t call me bro.” He turned his attention to Eve. “You’re obviously not interested, and that’s fine.”

Eve said, “I’m sorry, Aaron. I think you’re a nice guy—”

“You don’t owe me an apology or an explanation. It’s for the best anyway. I’d rather not be with someone who would drop me like a bad habit when a better-looking guy comes around.”

“That’s not fair. We barely know each other. It’s not like we had a commitment.”

Aaron nodded. “You’re right, but it would’ve been nice if you didn’t ditch me for my roommate.”

Eve blanched. “I really am sorry.”

Aaron shrugged and turned his attention back to Jack. “You’re an asshole for doing this. Do you have to have all the women?”

“I’m sorry, man,” Jack said, his hands held out. “If it makes you feel better, we didn’t do anything.
